Final Destination
Final Destination
Words and music by Dave.

Recorded at Dave's house.

This song was inspired by a short story written 30 years ago by one of my high school classmates, Kory R. Williams. After all this time, I remembered this story. Then one day I thought to myself: "That would make a good song!" It came together fairly quickly and here it is.
Final Destination

 ©2008 by David Langford Smith
He drives all alone down a twisty country road
Eyes straight ahead --focused on where he's got to go
He doesn't heed the dangers--doesn't look left or right
In the sleepy mountain town, he speeds right through the light

He doesn't even care
To glance up at the harvest moon
He just has to get there
and get there real soon
He doesn't check the fuel gauge
as he passes a filling station
His total concentration
is on his final destination

Who is this mystery driver--was he once a happy family man
Did he have a cozy little home on a pretty plot of land
Did he walk his kids to school and stop to smell the rose each day
Did he have the love he needed--but threw it all away?

His mind doesn't wander back to these things
He's left so far behind
Lazy days and Sundays
are the furthest from his mind
He doesn't give a thought
to his current situation
His total concentration
is on his final destination

All that matters now is this road and where it leads
He grips the wheel tighter and squeezes still more speed
There's no turning back. He's almost out of time.
His past is nothing more than two strips of black laid across the center line

Suddenly a pair of headlights
He jerks the wheel to the right
Tires squeal, rubber burns
He's not gonna make the turn
He crashes through the guardrail
Shattered glass--total devastation
He has reached
his final destination
